Tonight's bedtime conversation with the Li'l Colonel

"Mommy, I just want Daddy to come home."

"I know, buddy, I do too. And Daddy misses you so much. He wishes he could come home."

"But the army won't let him come home."

"Not for a while, but they'll let him come home when he's done. ...Forrest, do you know what Daddy is doing over there?"

He nods, but is silent.

"There are some really mean people there, and they are doing mean things to the other people who live there, and Daddy is there to try to stop the mean people and help the good people."

The worry lifts from his face and his eyes light up, he smiles and gasps and says,

"Mommy! When I grow up and be a daddy, I can do that too when I go there!"

I sure hope it doesn't ever come to that, little man, but you and your daddy sure do make me proud.

Thank you for sharing that. Even though it made me cry. Probably you, too.
